CARROLL COUNTY, Ind. (WLFI) – Many from Carroll County are grieving after a devastating house fire killed four children and hospitalized a deputy, an officer and the children’s mother.
Many officers, deputies, firefighters and paramedics attended a debriefing at 6 p.m. at Flora Methodist Church.
Authorities told News 18 debriefing is meant to help combat suicide, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder.
Many who attended the meeting were the heroes who did everything they could to save the lives of the four children. To them, this is one loss that will take time.
“We deal with life and death, and sickness all of the time. But when something tragic likes this happens, there is a lot of emotions that go through people’s minds,” said Carroll County EMS Director Doug Atkisson. “Tonight was just about letting them get this emotion out.”
Law enforcement agencies are also dealing with the fact two of their own were injured in the fire. Carroll County Sheriff’s Deputy Drew Yoder and Flora Police Officer Josh Disinger were taken to area hospitals.
Sheriff Tobe Leazenby said Yoder remains in the hospital. He is stable, but has severe damage to his lungs. Leazenby is optimistic he will make a full recovery.
