WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) — As many shoppers hit the mall to do some bargain shopping, some people took to the ice rink instead.

The Riverside Skating Center opened its doors Friday for the first day of the season.

Opening day is normally the day after Thanksgiving. It was delayed last year by a few days due to warm temperatures and rain.

In addition to public skating – private lessons, group lessons, private rentals and special events are available.

Rink guard Elizabeth Egan said ice skating is a great way to bring the family together.

“A lot of people in Lafayette have never been skating,” Egan said. “I think it’s a great way to get outside, enjoy the weather and have family time.”

Admission is $5 per person and skate rental is $3 per pair.
