WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) — A new institute at Purdue University is bringing departments all across campus together to develop technology for the United States military.

Purdue’s Discovery Park is now the home of the Global Defense and Security Institute. It connects professors and students from the schools of engineering, computer and behavioral sciences, among others.

The Institute’s goal is to research ways to stay ahead of the rapid changes in technology and apply it to military defense.

Institute Director Dan DeLaurentis said the current rate of defense innovation isn’t fast enough to keep up with the threat.

“They take 10, 12 or 15 years sometimes to go from conception to the field,” he said. “The threats and technology behind threats are changing so rapidly that we just can’t afford for things in that kind of time scale.”

Discovery Park Executive Director Tomas Diaz de la Rubia said the Institute helps Purdue fulfill its obligation to help the country.

“We’re a public, land-grant university. We have a mission to educate,” he said. “We have a mission to do research. We also have a mission to bring the fruits of that research out into society.”

DeLaurentis said in addition to Purdue faculty, private company partnerships must continue to be developed. He said the new Rolls Royce aerospace facility in West Lafayette is just the beginning.
